The Challenge

Create onboarding flows suitable for children and their caregivers. Ensure accessibility for diverse user groups including children with varying abilities, parents and guardians with different technical skills, and healthcare staff managing complex pediatric workflows.

The Solution

Designed an accessible hospital management system with intuitive onboarding flows, comprehensive proxy access for caregivers, and digital health record management specifically tailored for children's healthcare. The solution prioritized WCAG compliance and family-centered design approaches.

User Stories and Acceptance Criteria

Outlined below are a few examples of user stories and acceptance criteria, providing a tangible understanding of the functionalities and expectations.

User story 1.1

As a young person using the platform, I want to be able to log in using my mobile number so I can easily access my account information.

Acceptance criteria

  1. Mobile number field - Verification of number of digits , country code selection

  2. Password field - Option to view / hide password

  3. Submit button

  4. I would like to see error message incase of invalid details

User story 1.2

As a young person I want to authenticate every time I log in so that I am assured that my account is secured and no one else can access my information or log in to my account

Acceptance criteria

  1. OTP send to mobile number as soon as details entered by user match

  2. SMS received by user containing 6-digit OTP

  3. OPT pop-up opens with fields to enter code

  4. User enters OTP & clicks submit button

  5. If OTP matches, user is logged in & can access account information

  6. If OTP doesn’t match, error message is shown

  7. User can request Resend OTP (link to resend OTP)

  8. I would like to see OTP timer for 2 minutes

User Journey & Flow Architecture

The culmination of these efforts resulted in a meticulously crafted user flow, visualised and organised on a Miro board. The user flow covered a range of scenarios, including:

Enrolling a child and parent in the portal.

Establishing proxy connections between parents and children.

Accessing the dashboard for a comprehensive view of a child's health information.

Clinicians inviting patients to the portal and connecting with them.

Clinicians creating and recommending resources to patients.

Clinical admins approving proxy requests made by children/parents.

Admins obtaining an overview of the portal through audit logs.

Design Process

Research

Reviewed hospital workflows specific to pediatric care. Analyzed existing systems and conducted stakeholder interviews to understand the unique requirements of children's hospital management including family dynamics and accessibility needs.

Define

Drafted user stories for patients, caregivers, and clinicians in pediatric healthcare context. Created detailed acceptance criteria that addressed the complex relationships between children, parents, guardians, and healthcare providers.

03.

Ideate

Designed proxy access and health record flows specifically for children's healthcare. Created wireframes that accommodated age-appropriate interfaces and complex caregiver permission systems.

04.

Validate

Conducted accessibility reviews and iterations to ensure WCAG compliance. Collaborated with senior designers and healthcare staff to validate designs against clinical workflows and accessibility standards.

05.

Deliver

Produced UI screens aligned with WCAG standards. Created comprehensive documentation for developer handoff and provided ongoing design support during implementation.
